Irrfan Khan’s Spontaneous Genius
Agnihotri described Irrfan as an extraordinary artist who never failed to surprise his co-actors. “He’d never let you know what he would deliver on camera. He rehearsed something else and gave a completely different take. He understood the soul of the scene and enacted it according to his interpretation,” Agnihotri recalled.
This unpredictability often left his fellow actors stunned, creating a sense of energy and tension on set that enriched their performances.
Anil Kapoor vs. Irrfan Khan: Two Distinct Styles
According to Agnihotri, Anil Kapoor approached his craft with structured energy, staying true to the script. In contrast, Irrfan’s calm demeanor during rehearsals masked his powerful improvisations during actual takes.
“When Irrfan sat, you’d think he had no energy. Anil Kapoor wondered how the scenes would work because Irrfan didn’t rehearse. But if you watch their scenes together in Chocolate, they are brilliant. It was like a competition between the two, about who could surprise more in a scene,” Agnihotri said.
The contrast between Kapoor’s precision and Irrfan’s spontaneity, he added, elevated the film’s cinematic quality.
Irrfan Off Set: A Different Personality
While Irrfan mesmerized audiences on screen, Agnihotri fondly remembered his off-screen personality. After long days of filming, while the cast and crew gathered for casual conversations and drinks, Irrfan often fell asleep mid-gathering and had to be taken back to his room. “Off-set he was a completely different person,” Agnihotri shared.
