Cloudburst in Sahastradhara: Destruction and Chaos
The intense and continuous downpour late Monday night caused the Karligaad stream to swell dangerously. The surging waters led to the collapse of a key bridge and widespread damage to homes, shops, and property along its banks.
Residents in affected areas were immediately shifted to safer locations by local authorities.
Relief Operations Underway
District Magistrate Savin Bansal and SDM Kumkum Joshi reached the site at night to supervise emergency relief. Teams from the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), SDRF (State Disaster Response Force), and PWD were deployed with bulldozers to clear debris and restore access.
Search and rescue efforts are ongoing to locate the two missing persons.
Government Response and School Closures
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed damages to shops and property in Sahastradhara and assured the public that he is in constant touch with the local administration.
The District Magistrate ordered all schools in Dehradun, from Class 1 to 12, to remain closed to ensure student safety.
Previous Cloudburst Incidents in Uttarakhand
This is not the first such tragedy to hit Uttarakhand in recent months. In August, a cloudburst in Chamoli district’s Mopata village left two people missing and buried nearly 20 livestock under debris.
On September 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Dehradun to assess flood damage, chair a high-level disaster meeting, and announce Rs 1,200 crore in financial aid for affected regions.
